Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Hyco Lake?

Hyco Lake is Northwest of Roxboro, NC, on NC 57, or Southeast of Danville, VA.  From Roxboro: Take #57 North out of town.  Cross the lake twice, and turn left on Kelly Brewer Road at the Shell station.  From Danville: Take #58 East toward South Boston.  8.4 miles East of the Hampton, turn right on Hwy #62.  Go 12 miles (the road turns into #57 at the NC line), and turn right on Kelly Brewer Rd.  Both: Once you’re on Kelly Brewer, go 0.7 miles and turn right on Pointer Dr.  Follow the signs for Boats (left at the guardhouse) and pay at the office before launching.  If you are coming by car, go right at the guardhouse and park in the designated area.

Why Hyco?

Several reasons.  Hyco is a power plant lake, so water temps run 10+ degrees higher than other lakes in the area.  There are lots of places with narrow, deep water, so it’s foil friendly.  There is convenient refueling on the lake and a marina if you need odds and ends.  Note that there are some low bridges on the lake.  You will need to lower towers and extended pylons to get under them.

What does it cost?

The lake fee is $15 per day, even if you leave your boat in the water.  Pay it at the ranger station before you launch.  Alternately, you can purchase an annual sticker for $40.  If you’re there three days, save $5 by buying the annual.  As of 09/13/2002, fuel was $1.899 on the water and $1.399 at the station.

How do I hook up once I’m there?

If you have a FRS radio, bring it and call us on channel 9.  If you have a VHF Marine (much better), also try channel 9.  Check at the campground, the beach, and at the Marina.  We’ll be somewhere.   Make sure we know you’re coming! Send an email to Luke and let him know how many, what days, and are you bringing a boat.
